Short Story by Algernon Blackwood. Two psychic sleuths decide to investigate a supposedly haunted house. Initially, the ghosts go about their nightly business seemingly indifferent to the visitors. There is no sign of a threat until one of the pair gives way to their fear and begins to flee.

Short Story by Stephen King. An aging industrialist hires a hitman to kill his cat. The old man believes the cat, a stray taken in by his sister, is responsible for her death and that of two other members of his household, and fears he will be next.
Seven Floors
Short Story by Dino Buzzati. A slightly ill patient enters a ward on the top floor of a seven-story sanatorium. Once caught up in the system, and against his perception of the severity of his illness, he makes the slow, inexorable descent to the dreaded first floor of the dying.

Short Story by Stephen King. A boy saves his younger sister when she falls from a broken ladder. She comments: “You're my big brother. I knew you'd take care of me”. Later in life, he is too busy climbing a different ladder to be there when needed.
