Because the friend had chosen to adopt independently rather than through an agency, they are initially stonewalled by bureaucrats and find official orphanages closed to them. They gain the necessary approvals after a poverty-stricken mother unselfishly gives up her malnourished two-year-old son, only to find themselves temporarily caught up in a violent civil uprising. Mary Gaitskill doesn’t pull punches. This is one of those rare stories where you (almost) feel sympathy for a protagonist who is a real jerk. A father reflects on the past after learning that his daughter has written a magazine article about their relationship following her “coming out” as lesbian. Any sympathy stems from the fact that there are two sides to his character: the angry, self-absorbed homophobe who threw his daughter out of the house; and the confused, reclusive, emotionally troubled man struggling to face his failings as a father. In this story by Mary Gaitskill an insecure, introverted young woman from a dysfunctional family begins her first ever job as a secretary in a lawyer’s office. Unfortunately, her employer is a sadistic sexual predator. After several weeks of repeated spelling mistakes in letters she types, he calls her into his office and spanks her. She is both repulsed and sexually stimulated by the humiliation. She quits the job when he goes a step further and, after responding to the degradation by pleasuring herself, the poor woman suffers an emotional breakdown.
